We had the WRITE Idea
by Jamie Perkins
It was my privilege to teach the Writing and Computer class this summer at Lions Camp Badger. The students and I began by writing letters home and to the Governors of the Lions Clubs Districts that help support the camp. We learned about photojournalism (telling a story through pictures) and each student had the opportunity to take a picture of something that told the story of Lions Camp Badger.
In writing our autobiographies, we documented our lives and learned a little bit more about each other as individuals. The two camp newspapers that we published included the activities and events at camp from the students perspective, as well as their interviews of the staff. We surveyed the camp and each class group generated the questions that they wanted to ask their fellow campers.
Between the computers and writing, computers seemed to be the overall favorite among the students. We practiced our typing skills by typing our autobiographies, stories, and most memorably, a mock e-mail to Santa thanking him for our "Christmas in July" gifts and putting our Christmas lists in early for this year. Sometimes, if we finished our work early, we improved our mouse skills by using the paint program or playing card games.
I enjoyed the time I spent with the students this summer and they seemed to have as much fun as I did with the Writing and Computers course. They never ceased to amaze me with their creativity.
A big thank you goes out to my teachers aides and to the students themselves for all their hard work this summer to make this course a success.
